Berkeley nutrition writer Clara Felix, who founded the Felix Letter, a breezy but well-researched compendium of health and nutrition news, died Sunday. She was 82.

Ms. Clara Felix was born in New York and moved with her family to Los Angeles when she was in high school. She earned an associate\'s degree in zoology, was married and divorced twice, and raised three children before enrolling at UC Berkeley in the 1970s. She earned her bachelor\'s degree in biochemical nutrition in 1977 at age 55.

In 1981, she founded the Felix Letter, which she published quarterly in recent years.

She wrote frequently about the benefits of Vitamin C and omega-3 oils, the dangers of
trans fats, and the need to view skeptically the claims of the pharmaceutical industry and other commercial interests.

A free thinker and avid researcher, Ms. Clara Felix was not afraid to challenge conventional wisdom, and often emphasized nutrition topics and preventive- health strategies years before they became widely discussed.

\"Clara Felix was very much ahead of her time,\" said Laura Brainin-Rodriguez, coordinator of a family-nutrition program at the San Francisco Department of Public Health and a friend of Ms. Felix\'s since the two attended college together.

Clara Felix co-wrote three books on omega-3 oils. In recent years, she sought acceptance for alternative-medicine approaches in mainstream institutions, and advocated a nutritional treatment for sickle-cell anemia.

Ms. Clara Felix also was a big fan of her adopted hometown, referring to Berkeley in one recent newsletter as \"a garden of delights for aficionados of inflammatory bumper stickers.\"

Survivors include Clara Felix\'s daughter, Elissa Wagner of Aptos, California and Clara Felix\'s two sons, Elliot Wagner of San Leandro, California and Josh Wagner of Santa Cruz, California.
